Skin biopsy and mole mapping in Dodoma
When a rash or growth cannot be named by looking, a small sample under local anaesthetic gives a definite answer. Mole mapping documents your moles so change is caught early.

A definite diagnosis
A punch or shave biopsy takes a few minutes and a few millimetres of skin. The result, read by a pathologist, directs the right treatment and avoids months of guessing.

What is skin biopsy and mole mapping?
A biopsy is the removal of a small piece of skin for examination under the microscope. It is used for rashes that have not responded to treatment, unusual growths, suspected skin cancer and conditions such as lupus, lichen planus and scarring alopecia.
Mole mapping is a documented examination of all your moles with dermatoscopic photographs, repeated at intervals so that any change is seen and acted on early. It is advised for people with many moles, a family history of melanoma, or a previous skin cancer.
Why treat it
Medical reasons
Treating a rash with the wrong diagnosis wastes months and can cause harm. A biopsy ends the uncertainty. Early detection of skin cancer is the difference between a small procedure and a serious illness.
The process
From assessment to results
The dermatologist chooses the site and type of biopsy that will give the clearest answer, and explains what the sample is being tested for.
In the clinic, same visit:
- Local anaesthetic
- A punch (three to four millimetres) or a shave sample
- One or two stitches, or a dressing
- Ten to fifteen minutes
A small mark that heals in one to two weeks. Stitches out at seven to ten days.
The report comes back in about seven to ten days. The dermatologist explains it and starts the treatment it points to.

Who treats you
Your dermatologist
Is a biopsy the same as removing the whole growth?
No. A biopsy samples it. If the result calls for full removal, that is planned as a second step.
Will it scar?
A small round or line mark, usually faint. Sites are chosen to keep it discreet.
How often is mole mapping repeated?
Usually once a year, or sooner if a mole changes.
Can the results be sent to another doctor?
Yes, with your consent, through your TDCW record or as a printed report.
Is it safe in pregnancy?
Yes. Local anaesthetic biopsies are safe in pregnancy.
