Melasma and dark mark treatment in Dodoma
The most common reason people visit a dermatologist in Tanzania, and the one where the wrong product does the most harm. A structured programme, never bleaching.

Fade the marks, protect the skin
Melasma and post-inflammatory marks fade with the right combination of sun protection, prescription creams and, where suitable, peels or laser set for deeper skin. Results take months and hold only if the daily protection continues.
How it works here
- Book a skin consultation online or on WhatsApp.
- The dermatologist examines you and writes a plan with prices.
- Treatment starts the same day where suitable.

What is pigmentation and melasma?
Pigmentation is the skin making extra melanin in patches. Melasma is a symmetrical brown or grey-brown pattern on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip, driven by sun, hormones and heat. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the dark mark left after acne, eczema, an injury or a burn.
Deeper skin makes melanin readily, so marks form easily and last longer. Skin-lightening creams with steroids, hydroquinone in high strength or mercury thin the skin, cause rebound darkening and can damage the kidneys.
Why treat it
Medical reasons
Treatment stops the cycle of marks and removes the temptation to use harmful products. Some pigmented patches also need a dermatologist to rule out other conditions.
Confidence and comfort
An even tone is what most patients want most. It is achievable, safely, with patience.
The process
From assessment to results
The dermatologist identifies the exact type and depth of pigmentation, asks about products, pregnancy and contraception, and photographs the areas to measure progress.
A programme, not a single product:
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, without exception
- Prescription lightening creams at safe strengths, for a set time
- Chemical peels or laser chosen for deeper skin, where suitable
- Stopping any harmful product you are using
First lightening at eight to twelve weeks. Peels cause a few days of light flaking. Heat and sun during treatment set progress back.
A visibly more even tone over three to six months, and a maintenance routine that keeps melasma from returning.

Who treats you
Your dermatologist
Do you prescribe skin-lightening creams?
We prescribe safe, time-limited treatments for specific marks. We never bleach skin and never use mercury or unlicensed products.
Is melasma permanent?
It tends to return with sun and hormones, so it is managed rather than cured. With daily protection most people keep it well controlled.
Is laser safe on dark skin?
Only certain lasers at certain settings, and only after a test patch. The dermatologist decides case by case; for many patients, creams and peels are the better route.
Will it come back after pregnancy?
Melasma that appeared in pregnancy often fades afterwards and can return with the next pregnancy or with hormonal contraception. We plan for this.
How long will I need sunscreen?
Every day, for good. It is the single most effective part of the programme.
