What is eczema and dermatitis?
Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a tendency of the skin barrier to leak moisture and let irritants in, which makes the skin dry, itchy and inflamed. It runs in families and often starts in childhood.
On deeper skin it can look grey, purple or darker rather than red, and healed patches often leave lighter or darker marks. Heat, sweat, strong soaps and some fabrics make it flare.
Why treat it
Medical reasons
Scratching breaks the skin and lets infection in, and poor sleep from itching affects school and work. Good control prevents infections and the marks that follow.
The process
From assessment to results
The dermatologist confirms the type of eczema, checks for infection, and maps triggers with you. Patch testing is arranged if contact allergy is suspected.
A stepped plan:
- Barrier-repair moisturisers, applied generously
- Anti-inflammatory creams matched to the severity and the body site
- Treatment of any infection
- A written flare plan for home
Itch usually settles within days of starting; the skin barrier takes weeks to rebuild. Keep moisturising after the rash has gone.
Fewer, milder flares, and skin that stays comfortable. Phototherapy is available for widespread eczema that does not settle with creams.

Who treats you
Your dermatologist
Is eczema contagious?
No. It cannot be passed from one person to another.
Are steroid creams safe for my child?
Used at the right strength, for the right length of time and on the right area, yes. The dermatologist writes exactly how much and for how long.
Which soap should we use?
A fragrance-free, soap-free cleanser, and lukewarm rather than hot water. We recommend specific products at the visit.
Can it be treated by video?
Yes, for most cases. Infected or widespread eczema is better seen in person.
Will the dark marks go away?
Usually, over months, once the eczema is controlled. We can speed this with targeted creams and sun protection.
