Minor surgery, done properly
A cyst removed whole, with its wall, does not come back. A lipoma removed through a small incision leaves little trace. Each procedure is planned for the site, the size and your skin.

What is cyst and lesion excision?
A sebaceous (epidermoid) cyst is a sac under the skin filled with keratin; it can grow, become inflamed and discharge. A lipoma is a soft, harmless lump of fat under the skin. Other lumps include dermatofibromas and enlarged scars.
Most are harmless, but a lump that is growing, painful, fixed or changing should be examined and, if needed, removed and sent for analysis.
Why treat it
Medical reasons
Inflamed cysts become abscesses and scar badly when they burst. Removing a cyst while it is quiet is a small clean procedure; draining an infected one is not.
Confidence and comfort
Lumps on the face, neck and scalp are removed with the incision placed along natural skin lines.
The process
From assessment to results
Examination to confirm what the lump is. Ultrasound is arranged for deep or unusual lumps. The dermatologist explains the incision, the scar and the aftercare.
In the clinic:
- Local anaesthetic
- The lump removed whole through the smallest incision that allows it
- Fine stitches, sometimes in two layers
- Thirty to sixty minutes depending on size
Mild soreness for a day or two. Stitches out in seven to fourteen days. Avoid heavy exercise for a week. Scar care and sun protection for six months.
The lump is gone and, removed whole, does not return. Laboratory results, where sent, are explained within seven to ten days.

Who treats you
Your dermatologist
Can an infected cyst be removed?
It is drained and the infection treated first; the cyst wall is removed later once the area is quiet, so it does not return.
Will I need to stay in hospital?
No. This is a clinic procedure under local anaesthetic; you go home the same day.
Will it leave a keloid?
Keloids are more common on deeper skin and on the chest, shoulders and earlobes. We assess your risk, place incisions carefully and treat early signs promptly.
Can I drive afterwards?
Usually yes, unless the procedure was on a hand or foot.
Is the lump sent for analysis?
Any lump that is not obviously benign, yes, and any lump you would like analysed.
