Hair loss and alopecia treatment in Dodoma
Hair loss has many causes and most are treatable, but only once the cause is known. Early care protects the follicles that can still regrow.

Find the cause, then treat it
Traction alopecia from tight styles, patchy alopecia areata, scarring alopecia, hormonal thinning, breakage from chemicals and heat, and scalp infections all look different under the dermatoscope and need different treatment.
How it works here

What is hair loss and alopecia?
Hair grows in cycles from follicles in the scalp. Anything that disturbs the cycle, inflames the follicle or damages the hair shaft causes shedding, thinning or patches.
In Tanzania the commonest causes are traction from tight braids and weaves, chemical and heat damage, scalp infections and, in women, hormonal and nutritional changes. Some forms scar the follicle permanently if treatment is late.
Why treat it
Medical reasons
Scarring alopecias destroy follicles that never regrow. Treatment started early can stop the loss where it is and bring back hair in the follicles that are only resting.
The process
From assessment to results
Dermatoscopic examination of the scalp, a pull test, and blood tests or a small scalp biopsy where the pattern is unclear.
Matched to the diagnosis:
- Topical and oral medicines to slow loss and stimulate regrowth
- Scalp injections for patchy alopecia areata
- Treatment of any scalp infection or inflammation
- A styling plan that protects the hairline
Hair grows about a centimetre a month, so regrowth is judged at three and six months. Shedding often slows within weeks.
Loss stopped and density improved where the follicles are alive. PRP and mesotherapy can be added where suitable.

Who treats you
Your dermatologist
Will my hair grow back?
If the follicles are not scarred, usually yes with treatment. The examination tells us which kind you have.
Are braids and weaves the problem?
Tight styles over years are the commonest cause of hairline loss we see. Looser styles and breaks between them protect the follicles.
Do you treat scalp infections?
Yes. Fungal and bacterial scalp infections are common and respond well once confirmed.
Is a blood test needed?
Sometimes, to check iron, thyroid and hormones when the pattern suggests it.
Can this be done by video?
A first discussion, yes. Diagnosis needs the dermatoscope, so an in-person visit follows.
